IRREGULAR SHAPED HOUSING DESIGNS
Presenting some good examples of irregular shaped living units. Included geometric shapes: Round, triangle, dodecahedron, polygon. Mostly odd but good stuff that i can't fit into other categories.

N55
This outfit is the same group that created the "Walking House". This creation pictured on the right is a little more practical in my opinion.
"MICRO DWELLINGS is a system for making low cost dwellings of variable sizes for any number of persons. It consists of movable housing modules that can form different configurations on land, on water and under water. The system allows for a diversity of materials as well as changes and adaptations. The MICRO DWELLINGS are modular, can be scaled up and down, and expand and grow together with other systems into small communities. The MICRO DWELLINGS can be built onto rooftops of existing buildings or be suspended from a bridge or a wall. The modules can be mounted on wheels to become mobile or be connected to form floating constructions. As is the case with the version shown in this manual, they can also be made as watertight, amphibian houses that can be completely submerged or partly elevated to the water surface. Most functions will be built into walls, and furniture, household equipment etc. will be provided by movable elements that change functions during the day. Supply modules can be mounted on the outside of the main modules. The MICRO DWELLINGS are able to reflect changes in life, e.g. people moving in and out, the arrival of children, etc, as it is easy to add to the construction in stages. If people want to live together they can simply let their dwellings grow together, likewise, it is easy to separate modules and move them if desirable. The MICRO DWELLINGS in themselves do not define a social constellation, but only provide the basic equipment so that persons can configure their own social setting. The present version of the system is made of cheap steel plates and can be constructed by anybody who knows how to weld."

ESKIMOHUT
This is another cool project from instructables.com. This man did a great job of explaining how to build this neat little hut out of used lumber.
"This is a description with pics of how i built my Eskimohut in wood.
As i made it from reprocessed wood from torn down houses and other buildings this is a totally green project.
Tools/materials you need are: a hammer, saw, drill, spirit level, nails, tarpaper, wood and a lot of patience!
As a non-American/English speaker, i use the metric system, so i had to use an online converter to be able to present the measurements in inches."

THE INSTITUTE FOR PLANETARY RENEWAL
This site whether or not you agree with the owners premise, has a good system for building housing using their low cost techniques. Very interesting site. I did find one date: Last update: 9/26/96. But still a lot of good information.
"If we are to create a Paradise on Earth we will have to change the way we live with ourselves.
In developed countries, the high cost of living requires that we earn lots of money.
If we work hard and earn a lot, then something must be produced with that effort.
If goods are produced, they must be consumed or else we will have no work.
If they are consumed, natural resources must be used.
If natural resources are used excessively and not recycled, as they presently are, then the earth is wasted.
Therefore a high standard of living, based upon mass consumption and minimal recycling (our present design) inevitably leads to the destruction of the ecosystems that we rely upon for our survival. If undeveloped countries follow our path, the destruction of the ecosystems we depend upon is assured.
If we can eliminate the high cost of living, then we can live more sensibly on the Earth. In the past, a simpler lifestyle meant a low quality of life, but does it really have to be? We believe not.
We believe that it is possible to substantially INCREASE our quality of life and our material comforts by applying better design principles to solve the needs of housing, energy, food, and other necessities and comforts. We do not have to suffer. In fact, we are suffering now much more than we need to because of the poor designs of our civilization."

ORANGE-PEEL HOUSE
This is an idea. Someone out there could remanufacture these units, get them back on the market, not using my money.
Developed in Germany, a portable shelter for camping or trailer travel looks like a gigantic orange — and peels apart almost like one. The parts of the shelter are shaped like the segments of an orange. One person can fasten the segments together in 15 minutes. The parts of the shelter including the floor are made of plywood. The parts can be disassembled and placed into a small trailer for relocation to another camp spot.
No manufacturer contact information.

THE LOGAN ROUND HOUSE Located in the state of Ohio this is an example of what you can do with concrete in the form of a round house. Those of you interested in building a round house out of concrete will appreciate this website to give you some ideas for completing your project.
"I had heard rumors of a building in Logan shaped like a giant golf ball, but I wasn't sure if it qualified as "forgotten" in any way or not, or if it was perhaps part of a miniature golf place or something like that. Then one day I stumbled upon it while trying to find a canoe rental place after a night in a Hocking Hills cabin. As you can see, it's a bizarre building. It's also completely abandoned."

DODECAHEDRON HOUSE
Another view of the house being constructed click here.
Actually, this very practical house is made in Japan and can be delivered to it's home site by helicopter or by more conventional means. I do believe a Japanese company actually sells these in Japan. A dodecahedron shape has 12 faces (sides), 30 edges, & 20 vertices's. The website is in the Japanese language, even if you do not understand the Japanese language click around the Japanese language site and you can see the different projects this skillful man has developed. COCOON
This is actually a rental unit in Australia. Wye River is a small town in Victoria, Australia situated some 96 miles west of Melbourne, on the Otway Coast part of the scenic Great Ocean Road. Wye River is a popular tourist destination about 9 miles west of the resort town of Lorne, Victoria, Australia. The shape appears to be that similar to a blimp or dirigible.
"This cocoon for weekend living is situated in a bushy coastal hamlet on the Great Ocean Road. The steepness of the site, the dramatic views and the sometimes harsh climate resulted in a object house that whilst protecting from the elements, opened one side to the landscape. In principle this is a matchbox inside an egg, a rectangle within an oval. Inside, the spaces dovetail together with the economic precision of a small boat or caravan. The light weight monocoque structure is a hybrid of techniques appropriated from boat building and aircraft engineering. The path to building this home was one of unleashing the pragmatic inside the poetic."

MEDITATION DODECAHEDRON
This old popular science "How-to-build" article features a 12-sided dodecahedron, (each face of which is a perfect pentagon; a pentagon i think is a shape in space which has 5 sides all equal in length) used as a "meditation" room. You understand "meditation"? Like a quiet place you go to - to think and be quiet. The finished structure is kind of small, but maybe you can expand the dimensions to make a much larger structure.
"The fun, then, in making your personal Meditator, is double: First you create 11 phalanges (only the access panel is left bare), then discover the unexpected cross-referencing when you wrap yourself in the assembled panels. Beyond that, you'll be able to compare responses with your friends. And when you feel you've exhausted the potential of a given assembly, it's easy to paste new pictures over the old.
I think you'll be surprised by the new perspectives you'll get toward the world about you, and your own part in it. I'll soon be taking the Meditator with me (knocked down, it fits into a station wagon or sedan) on a college lecture tour as part of my demonstration of design technique. Teachers who have had an advance look at the Meditator feel that with changeable panels - it could be utilized in schools as a teaching environment. A breeze to build. When you go to the lumber yard for the 3/8" plywood, see if they'll saw the 4-by-8 panels in half for you. Four-foot squares are easier to handle.
After you've cut all the pentagons as illustrated, clamp them into two groups of six and lay out the 1/4" holes along the edges. To bore these holes accurately, it's best to use an accessory stand with your portable drill. The distance from the edge should match the holes in the corner angles you buy. Spread one of the angles to an accurate 117 degrees, checking with a protractor, then use it as a template for the other 89.
Give all wood parts a coat of enamel undercoat. When this is dry and smoothed with fine sandpaper, apply a good semigloss enamel finish to the outside faces and all edges. For a decorative effect, paint adjacent panels contrasting colors and paint the feet to match or contrast."

PREFAB DEFENSE HOUSE
One person commented that this looks like a grain silo converted into living quarters. That is probably a good idea for someone who has access to one that is no longer being used or maybe they are cheap enough to buy new and can be converted into a home.
From Blog Modern Mechanix archives:
"This radical-looking prefabricated house is one of the many types which have been submitted to the Division of Defense Housing Coordination as a quick, cheap method of housing defense workers. The house weighs only a ton, and can be constructed in six days by one man".

PRECISION PYRAMIDS
Even if you are not a believer these cool frames might be adaptable for other human shelter uses. Possibly could be covered with a tarp or sheet metal or plywood.
Pyr-a-mids! Or that which means in Greek, "Fire-in-the-middle." Pyramids come in many shapes, sizes, and forms, and have been attributed to be able to do many wondrous things from sharpening razor blades (as well as your mind!), to mummifying people and animals, to being the Sacred Chamber where the Initiate enters into to his Final Test in order to realize her True Godhood.
Pyramids! Some people claim that it makes their plants grow wild. Others say that it increases their telepathic abilities and out-of-body experiences. Some people use them to preserve food; others, to make a better bottle of wine. Kernals of wheat, over 3000 years old, where found in the King's Chamber of the Great Pyramid and still grew, a world's record.
I sell high-quality, precision-made meditation pyramids of all different sizes to suit everyone's need. I have been working at this for over four years, making jigs and templates and designs that will create the best meditation pyramids that I can possibly make. Please take a gander through my website. I think you will like what you will see.

FIBERGLASS IGLOOS
This site is actually called "Mr. Igloo" home of the fiberglass igloo, a very cool idea. They refer to themselves as the "THE MASTER OF MODULAR IGLOO CONSTRUCTION".
"Fiberglass igloo shelters are self supporting, which means that there are no poles, or columns in the center. They are easy to heat in the winter, and the white color helps reflect heat in the summer. They are "Modular in Construction" which makes it possible to ship and transport. They could also be made "Air Tight" for use as a chemical bunker. The rugged Fiberglass Igloo will provide you with years of trouble free, reliable comfort."

FREE SPIRIT SPHERES It is a type of tree house i suppose from British Columbia Canada. Nice website, good pictures.
"Uses for these durable Spheres are limited only by ones imagination. Healing, meditation, photography, canopy research, bedroom, leisure and game watching are just some of the things you could do. Spheres can be hung from the trees as shown or from any other solid objects like buildings or rock faces. A web of rope is connected to any strong points available. This replaces the foundation of a conventional building. A suspended tree house uses the forest for its foundation. Each sphere has four attachments on top and another four anchor points on the bottom. Each attachment is strong enough to carry the entire sphere and contents."

SUBURBAN TIPI Check out this very neat modern tipi concept developed by John Paananen using modern high tech materials. The idea: "take the fused nomadic home designs of the yurt, tipi, and igloo and slip the straitjacket of suburban values, materials, and methods of construction over them". Very interesting result. I placed this item here on this page because it is not really an Indian tipi. Just looks similar in design.
"Exterior material List: PVC siding, polypropylene fluted sheeting, engineered timber, polycarbonate structured sheeting, foil-foam-foil insulation, plywood, polyethylene sheeting, a whole lot of screws. Interior materials: plastic laminate flooring, concrete fire pit, carpet tiles, hardboard panels, polypropylene fluted sheeting. Dimensions: 18' diameter x 16' tall. The idea: take the fused nomadic home designs of the yurt, tipi, and igloo and slip the straitjacket of suburban values, materials, and methods of construction over them. Want a suburban tipi or something like it? Drop me a line at john [at] johnnyp.org"

GLOBE HOUSE
Someone could pick up this design and start building globe homes (we'll call them globbers) out of fiberglass using a large round mold to form the outer shell. There are several travel trailers made out of fiberglass (the outer shell) so i am sure it would work for this type of housing. Click on the link to view more specifics about this house.
"Only 15 feet in diameter, this low-cost home offers all the conveniences of a larger one. And, it can be delivered by boat, truck or even a helicopter."

A-Z WAGON STATIONS
This lady has designed a couple of structures which have great appeal to me. The one shown here is the A-Z Wagon Station, a portable sleeping unit usable almost anywhere.
The prototype for the A-Z Wagon Station is inspired by two different generations of "wagons." The covered wagons used by the original settlers of the West, and the station wagon of the 20th Century which provides just the minimum space needed to create privacy and comfort for its occupants. To date, we have built 18 Wagon Stations which now dot the land surrounding my house at A-Z West, and I have invited friends and collaborators who frequently visit to customize their own personal Stations. The Stations reflect the qualities that I feel create independence for the owner and user: compactness, adaptability and transportability. Their compact, enclosed shape is durable, can be closed and locked up when not in use, and can be camouflaged to hide in covert locations. Although the Wagon Station doesn't have wheels, it can be partially disassembled and packed into more remote or difficult to reach locations.

FLYING CONCRETE
This is the website of Steve Kornher, an expert in building with "Light Weight Concrete": Born in Gooding, Idaho USA, 1950. 30 years building experience, 15 of those years in Mexico. I have been interested in Alternative Building Practices for most of this time and have worked with adobe and rammed earth as well as various types of concrete masonry construction. Author of "The Complete Handbook of Solar Air Heating Systems, Rodale Press, 1984". He also does consulting work - contact him below.
About Light Weight Concrete:
"Concrete is strong in compression and the best way to take advantage of this property is by building structures that are inherently self-supporting and don't need a lot of iron reinforcing. Since most building here in Mexico is with concrete, it is easier to let your imagination go wild. Local builders have been working with ferro-cement, styrofoam panels, plastered straw bale, and soil-crete. I have had the most success with light weight concrete. Light weight concrete differs from heavy concrete by it's use of naturally light weight materials (aggregates) such as pumice (volcanic stone) in place of the sand and gravel used in ordinary structural concrete mixes. It only weighs half as much. Not all concrete is ugly, hard, cold and difficult to work with. There exists a whole range of light weight concretes "which have a density and compressive strength very similar to wood. They are easy to work with, can be nailed with ordinary nails, cut with a saw, drilled with woodworking tools, easily repaired. We believe that ultra-light weight concrete is one of the most fundamental bulk building materials of the future."

PALLET HOUSE
This is a side project by a business called i-beam design.
This is an interesting project with some good pictures included. It consists of a framework built using pallets, but unfinished as far as sheathing is concerned.
"Prototype built for the achitecture triennale
in milan, italy, "casa per tutti", 2008."
I-Beam Design was founded by Suzan Wines and Azin Valy in 1998. The firm has received numerous awards, most notably, first prize in the International Open Competition for the redesign of Lt. Petrosino Park in Lower Manhattan and an honorable mention for their solution to Transitional refugee Housing for the returning refugees of Kosovo, sponsored by Architecture for Humanity. Both projects were featured in the 7th International Architecture Venice Biennale.
I-Beam Design is an innovative New York based architecture and design firm whose various architecture, interior design and public art projects are based on the principal that space as a fluid medium should be adaptable and responsive to site conditions and inhabitant's needs. We design flexible matrixes that are able to evolve according to changing environmental factors and input from the users. This expansive approach leads to dynamic and playful solutions.
Each project is treated as a unique set of relationships, and the design emerges from an analysis of the parallels between the existing infrastructure, natural features and cultural identity of the site. As a result, our projects are always site specific. All architectural elements are designed to efficiently satisfy spatial, functional and programmatic requirements simultaneously.
The built environment is a complex network of interdependent systems whose equilibrium is in a constant state of flux. Our work celebrates the conceptual and experiential potential that chance brings to architecture as we seek to build places that are "alive".

THE STUNNING TENTS COMPANY
WOW! This is really a cool site. This business specializes in modern fabric covered tipis ranging from smaller personal sizes up to tents which can cover large groups of people. Their designs are very good in my opinion. As they say: Unusual and highly practical equipment for an outdoor life. Giant wooden pole tents, camping tents, heating, cooking and much more. Everything to equip occasional family camping trips, extreme expeditions and permanent corporate installations.
There are many different tent fabrics used by many tent manufacturers. Often the fabrics look alike when they are new, but the differences are quite substantial. A poor quality tent will let you down just when you need it the most.
Tent fabrics intended for all-year-round usage must meet up to rigorous demands. We have chosen fabrics that best meet these various requirements and needs. Come and see us at our warehouse and we can show you every type and size of Tentipi tent from Safir 5 to Stratus 72. And all the accessories.
PRICE PROMISE: If you can find the same Tentipi product elsewhere for less, we'll match the price.

ENCORE SYSTEMS
This is a company in Moorhead, Minnesota that makes "Tire Balers". They refer to themselves as "The World Leader in Tire Baling Technology".
"Most people don't realize that hidden beneath all this negativity is a valuable building block. Many tire recycling options available in the market today require very expensive start-up and operating costs. More pollution can result in the end. At Encore Systems, our tire baling equipment compresses whole passenger tires, light truck tires and commercial truck tires into a single bale measuring 30" X 50" X 60". Our equipment is also capable of baling other recyclables such as cardboard, aluminum, etc. The completed bales are easily handled with a fork-lift, front-end loader or logger's clam."

TIRE BALE HOUSE
There are a number of websites specializing in this new way of building a home. I will list this one as a start. This is a great way to use up those old tires that just seem to get in the way.
"If you're looking for an alternative building technique to the rammed earth tire (earthship) home or to the traditional stick built, tied to the utility grid home, the tire bale house may be for you.
Our names are Steve and Kathy King and we have developed this web site in response to the many questions about the feasibility of building with tire bales. We are building our home in western Colorado similar to the "earthship" concept created by Michael Reynolds but with several changes, many which use conventional building techniques.
We really liked the idea of using tires, cans, and bottles to build with and using solar for electricity and warmth, but physically pounding dirt into 1000 plus tires - ouch! Instead of pounding dirt into all those individual tires, a good friend and architectural designer of earthship houses, Michael Shealy, suggested we use TIRE BALES for the outside walls. The finished block weighs approximately 1 ton and measures 30"x 50"x 60" and contains 100 whole passenger and light truck tires. The tire bales are fastened together with five 9 gauge Square-Lok galvanized or stainless steel baling wires. This is now the industry standard for tirebales in civil engineering.
The tire bales inability to hold water eliminates the public health threat from mosquitoes. The decreased surface area, density of the bale, and lack of air greatly reduces the risk of fire. Volume reduction of 5 to 1 is another advantage of baling for increased storage space and efficient transportation benefits."

CONCRETE CUBE CABIN
This is my own concept or idea. I do not know of anyone who has actually tried making a cabin with this method. They use heavy-duty cranes to place these cubes in the desired location. I was thinking maybe a large forklift could be used to unload these from the truck and and also used to manipulate the cubes into position. Heavy-duty glass windows could be installed on both ends, one with a sliding glass door.
Standard Specification for Precast Reinforced Concrete Box Sections for Culverts, Storm Drains, and Sewers.
Reinforcement in precast box sections shall conform to ASTM Specifications A185.
Minimum Concrete Strength shall be 5,000 psi at 28 days.
Joints shall be sealed with mortar, mastic or flexible butyl rubber sealants.
Contact our plant for all sizes and weights that are available.

TIRE BALE CONSTRUCTION
Here is some more information for you on this relatively new use of discarded tires. This is the website of "Touch The Earth Construction" located in Colorado, i think.
"Tire-bales are "big rubber bricks". Place them in the wall with a large fork-lift, a hay-grapple, larger size skid-steer w/forks (3,000# tipping weight, minimum), or a backhoe. They're made in an hydraulic press, click here to see the press exerting extreme forces to compress approximately 100 tires into a "brick" 2-1/2' x 5' x 5', weighing ~2,000#, wrapped with (5) .113 inch dia. steel wires pre-formed into square-knot ends which are hooked together when the press reaches it's compression capacity. The press is then released and the bale is completed. The bale is now the density of most wood, weighing in at roughly 50 pounds per cubic foot and containing only 5% air."
-
THE CULVERT HOUSE This is a good website for those of you who would consider building a home using a steel culvert as a shell.
"The shell of the house was described as being a steel culvert, normally used for drainage systems and road work which gave the house an extremely economical and structurally strong basis."

PORT-A-HUT This business is located in Storm Lake, Ohio. Originally used for housing livestock, but can be adapted for human use. Well, that's my personal opinion, not the manufacturer's opinion. So you the reader of this will have to decide for yourself if this is a good idea or not. I would imagine that the walls would collect a lot of water from human perspiration. So, you would probably be wise to cut out and frame-in windows of some sort to provide a source of fresh air. If you do not ventilate this properly you could suffocate and die.
"Port-A-Hut, Inc. has been manufacturing portable shelters since 1964. The owners raised hogs in a pasture setup for over 40 years. All equipment was tested on the farm before manufacturing. As the word spread about the portability and ease of assembly, so did the uses. Nowadays the small huts and the larger shelters are used for all types of livestock and many other uses like lawn and garden shelters or garages. Port-A-Hut shelters are used for swine, calves, goats, sheep, horses, ostrich, emu, llamas, dogs, even some zoo animals. Port-A-Huts are used in all sizes of farming operations."

INFLATABLE WORLD
Very clever use of air.
"The Life Cube™ is a uniquely innovative, rapidly deployed, disaster shelter which dramatically increases the critical first 72 hour survival rate for victims in a disaster. The cube is easily transported as it can be fork lifted, trucked (the average bed holds four cubes), skided, wheeled, dragged, and air-dropped. Inside the self-contained cube, survivors shall find: Enough food and water to support six people for at least a week, a class-four first aid kit, a heating and cooking stove, four inflatable beds complete with sleeping bags, an ice box, a 12V cordless tool kit, interior lighting, and CB/AM/FM radio."
"Inflatable World™ is committed to designing innovative, inexpensive, and easy to manufacture products. The materials we use are over 90% recyclable, safe, smaller, faster. Also, because our product line is an assemblage of already manufactured products, our company operations are clean and economical. Imagine, our main active ingredient is air: What could possibly be greener than air?"

TECHNITOP ROOFTOP TENT This is a really neat tent and quite unique too! This tent is designed to be used on top of a vehicle. The link i have here goes to a distributor in Golden, Colorado.
"This tent is state of the art technology in rooftop accommodation. Technitop tents provide a comfortable nights sleep to the weary traveller. Careful choice of materials and excellent design ensure a tent that's cool in the heat of the day and well insulated and warm on a cold night.
The tent folds and packs away easily into a dustproof, waterproof and durable polyethelene case.
Technitop tents are available with Shower/Change cubicles which attach to the overhanging tent base, as well as easy to erect Shade Awnings which attach to the tent or vehicle roofrack."

TREE TENTS
I do not know if this is something you can actually use or whether it is a method being developed by the inventor or what. But it is an option i suppose for camping off the ground.
This site is the personal website of Dré Wapenaar and he develops some very nice tent designs.
CANVAS-ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN and SCULPTURE
"Studio Dré Wapenaar works at the interface of architecture, design and sculpture. Sculpture is the base. Working with sculptures, presented in a three-dimensional context, is dealing with people turning around the work and being confronted with it. In working with tents and pavilions this movement is enlarged towards people turning and twisting around each other as well.
It can be seen as a result of the quest to find out how groups of people and individuals relate.
Tents, with the universal language they speak, are an excellent means to understand at least something of the chemistry between people."

FIBERGLASS STORM SHELTER
I have a similar business listed on the irregular shaped page. They are probably related someway.
The Fiberglass Storm Shelter is structurally strong and self supporting. For this reason you do not need support poles inside your Storm Shelter. This makes for more useable area for sleeping and storage. But unlike other Storm Shelters, you can use your Fiberglass Storm Shelter just about anywhere. Have you ever seen a Storm Shelter on a sandy beach? Well, now you could. Your Storm Shelter could be set up and used anywhere. It can even be buried to create an Emergency Underground Tornado Shelter. Fiberglass can be drilled, threaded, bonded to or have cut outs to mount external equipment, such as an air conditioner. You might even add straight wall sections to achieve an oblong shaped Storm Shelter. With all of the design flexibility, you may create an unlimited number of different housing configurations, even buried underground. Create the ultimate hunting, fishing, or camping retreat. Imagine having a camp site all ready set up and waiting your arrival. No tents to mess with.

KIFARU They sell high quality shelters to include backpack tipis made from synthetic fabric. Their tipis are made for regular outdoor use not for mountain man rendezvous type or indian type tipis. Check out also their poncho liner they make and sell. I like sleeping under a military poncho liner - very comfortable.
This "real world" designer spends a third of the year in the middle of nowhere, and many more days wandering on local mountains evaluating gear ideas. He's been doing it for more than fifty years so he knows a thing or two about living "out there".

EDAR.ORG
Check out this latest invention for the homeless on Los Angeles streets.
A tent cot on wheels. A clever idea. Cost about $500.00 each unit. In experimental state right now. I would like to buy one of these for my own personal use.
"EDAR (Everyone Deserves A Roof) is a 501(c)(3) charity that provides unique mobile shelters to those living on the streets all around us. Each EDAR is a four-wheeled mobile unit which carries belongings and facilitates recycling during the day and which unfolds into a special, framed tent-like sleeping enclosure with a bed at night.
While respecting permanent and temporary housing for the homeless in group settings which use buildings to provide shelter, EDAR addresses the unrepresented hundreds of thousands of homeless people amongst us for whom no beds are available or who are unable or unwilling to participate in those solutions."

RECOVER SHELTER
This link connects to the "Yanko Design" newsletter. Here they feature the "Recover Shelter", a shelter which unfolds like an accordian.
"Giant Accordian Relief. I'd wager if chronic disaster survivors had a choice of where to lodge, they'd choose what's actually called the Recover Shelter. With several components that make it eco-friendly, cheap to produce, easy to transport, reconfigurable, and adaptable to multiple environments, Matthew Malone's design has great potential for emergency situations and beyond...
Designed for disaster relief, the Recover Shelter can house a family of four for a month. It can be set up by one person in minutes, collapsed into either of two configurations for transportation (horse-shoe shape or flat), and is made of 100% Coroplast (food grade polypropylene) so there is no harmful outgassing or leaching of chemicals to the environment or the user.
The polypropylene makes the Recover Shelter 100% recyclable, the ridges can collect drinking water, and the structure can be covered in local materials for better insulation.
A wonderful giant accordion house to for those who are disaster ridden, or a super-hip tent for the super-hip green hipster-camper."

"UniFold concertina folded plastic panel structures are self-supporting and an ideal solution to the universal need for fast, easy, fully enclosed, and affordable structures. UniFold is simply the world's fastest and easiest fully enclosed structure. Period. UniFold shelters outperform tents because they:
- Last longer - will not rot or mildew.
- Stay drier - will not absorb water.
- Keep cooler (or warmer when heated) - with double skinned walls, floor and roof.
- Include a non absorbent floor - for long term hygiene.
- Resist the most inclement weather - the only unitized folded structure on Earth.
- Are livable - with load supporting side walls for organizing personal effects."

IADDIC SHELTERS
This organization is based in Texas. They show at least two models of their product. One is pictured here.
"IADDIC Shelters offers innovative shelter solutions for disaster relief and urban renewal application. Did you know that 1.4 billion people in the world this year will go to sleep each night without adequate shelter? Whether due to a natural disaster (such as earthquake, hurricanes, typhoon or tsunami) or economic tragedy or over-population (the kind that produces a slum village, shanty town, favela or other kind of slum), hundreds of millions of people throughout the world do not have adequate shelter. If you're like us, you probably thought when you first heard that statistic "somebody should do something". We're that somebody (or at least one of them). At IADDIC Shelters, our goal is to build shelters for the "houseless" people of the world. But we don't build just any kind of shelter. We build instant shelter units that are better than mere temporary housing. Depending on the configuration options, these portable emergency shelter units ARE NOT just temporary buildings, they're housing. We believe our innovative technology and low cost will allow us to build our shelter structures for 500 million of these "houseless" people. The clock is ticking... and we're already at work solving the problem along with the birth control clinics of the world."

THE POD This is really neat. I think the website is down or something is wrong. They may be out of business, i don't know. However!!! I am very happy to have found the pictures of these creations that i thought had long gone missing. From what i can gather these are a product of an "Icosa Village Inc." They are actually called "Icosa Village Pods". They were designed to provide temporary housing for homeless people around the world. I think they are were made out of cardboard and plastic. Possibly all that is left of the company that built them is these pictures. The link i have here goes to inhabitat.com the website that has stored these pictures for posterity. Thank You.

REFUGIA
Since that Katrina event i think maybe a number of businesses have sprung up selling their quick assembly housing units in the event of another disaster which might displace a bunch of people. I like these ideas and it would be nice if a person could buy one unit for their own personal use.
"The Exos are base housing units that make up the foundation of the Reaction housing system. They provide private living and sleeping quarters for a family of four within a climate-controlled environment. An Exo is durable enough to be stored on a long-term basis and flat packs for efficient storage and transportation. Electrical power is delivered via a special connector line that powers each unit's lighting and four wall outlets. The Exo's design allows for numerous configurations to meet any need or deployment condition."

GLOBAL VILLAGE SHELTERS
Creating communities and individual homes for people in need.
"The Global Village Shelter is an alternative to current solutions for disaster relief housing. The present disaster relief field relies heavily on tent and tarp structures; these structures offer little protection from outdoor elements and no sense of personal space. The GVS is a rigid structure that can be assembled in the field by two people in approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The instructions are simple graphics with limited text. The user simply unpacks the base and the roof modules and assembles the GVS on site. The design is a simple structure that would give the affected person/family stability (durability) and safety during a disaster or refugee situation. To accomplish durability, the shelter has a concentric 'ring' structure; the units have withstood winds up to 80 mph. The shelter is built out of a very strong 13mm Polypropylene profile sheet (thick UV resistant white plastic, often used in outdoor applications). The material is biologically inert, does not off gas, and can be reground (recycled) throughout the world. All edges are reinforced with polypropylene extrusions to prevent wear in this high traffic area, also adding strength to the door area and other stress points. All shelter components are pre fabricated and installed prior to shipping and packing. Material samples are can be requested by emailing mferrara@ferraradesign.com.
There are no comparable shelters actively on the market. The cost and ease of set up are both significant benefits for GVS as disaster relief housing. GVS allows any person to set up their own housing without much guidance or strength- no tools are required. GVS also offers several comfort factors: a removable acrylic window with a screen, dual locking door system, and optional fire safe stove pipe aperture in the wall. There are several options that can also be added to the GVS, such as various flooring solutions (including, but not limited to tarps, plywood/foam, elevated flooring). The cross ventilation creates a temperature equilibrium with the outdoor temps in warm climates - it will not get warmer than the outside temperature.
The shelter will last 18 months or more. It is possible to extend this time period by using the walls as a footprint on which to build either with brick, mud, hay-bale materials, wood, corrugated tin, et al and providing a more substantial floor (not a tarp); basic maintenance like this can greatly extend its life. We recommend putting shelter units on raised platforms, creating a stable (you can screw the unit onto the platform) and level floor."

SHELLHOUSE Featuring "Collapsible Cardboard Shelters. Using Radio Devices for Homeless Persons. Having an address is how we exist on society, how we become citizens, where we can be located, where we receive our mail, where our family and friends can contact us. A house is where we validate this existence in the physical space. A shelter that gives us protection, our intimate space. Inhabitable collapsible structure made of cardboard becomes a shelter able to provide an address to a defined group of unsheltered homeless persons, by means of radio devices, proposing a way to integrate them to society. How to make visible this layer of the population by using technology? By using existing social networks is possible to DIY for someone else. KAMP-RITE TENT COT I am including this item on this website because it is very efficient housing especially if you happen to be a homeless person. I purchased one of these a long time ago and here is my experience with it. The first time i used it was in Lucerne Valley California and on a cold night. I closed the flaps for a good nights sleep. But the reality was that it soon became a rain forest inside and also the sleeping surface was very uncomfortable. It was a terrible experience and i did not sleep well. Here is how to make it work. First, you have to have plenty of ventilation on cooler nights or days or moisture from your body will condense heavily on the ceiling and walls of the inside and will start to drip on you or if you even touch the sides or ceiling water will rain down on you. You have to keep the flaps up on cool or cold nights. You absolutely need to use an air mattress or foam pad or foam mattress to provide a decent surface to sleep on. In warmer weather the condensation problem is not as bad but you need lower humidity to help dissipate the moisture from your body. In place of the rain fly they sell you i would try a plastic tarp instead. You need to control the ventilation and draping a loose fitting e.g. 10 ft x 8 ft or bigger brown or green plastic tarp over the entire tent cot and then open all flaps might be a good thing to try. I love the idea of the tent cot but the ventilation problem is big in my opinion and if it is not solved you will be miserable. Solving the bedding problem is a simple matter but the inside of the tent cot collects condensation like a sponge if you do not ventilate properly.

HOMELESS CHATEAU 2008
I like the idea. Kind of a simple neat box which serves to keep you off the floor and gives you a little privacy.
"Homeless Chateau 2008 model, is a prefab one person living module, measuring approximately 4 x 8 x 4 feet and made from FSC certified and recycled materials. It is designed to be used inside another building, such as a warehouse, and is fully self-contained, including a bed and cooking and toilet facilities. There are hooks for clothing and towels, and a built-in shelf unit, made from a pallet, for storage of food, books and other items. A rubber flap over the entrance provides privacy, and one end of the structure is made from translucent polyurethane to let in natural light. Homeless Chateau is fabricated from standard 4 x 8 and 4 x 4-foot sheets of plywood, OSB and construction signs, and can be knocked down, transported flat, and erected quickly and easily with just a screwdriver. Once assembled, the structure can be moved around the host space on its casters and then set in place with a temporary foundation--two bricks under the front. Homeless Chateaux can be easily reconfigured and combined to make dual-occupancy and eight-foot-tall structures."

DASPARKHOTEL
O.K. This is a very unique hotel situated in Germany. They have successfully used precast large concrete drain pipe as sleeping rooms
for rent. Check out their very interesting policy as described below. Click on picture for inside view.
Just like Elias Canetti said it in his book — "The Voices of Marrakesh". To keep your wits about you in a strange city, it is necessary to have a place to be alone, to hide from the new and strange voices when they get to be to much; dasparkhotel would like to offer a temporary comfortable uncomplicated home for a certain time.
dasparkhotel is conceived and implemented primarily as a hospitality tool. It is constructed from repurposed, incredibly robust drain pipes. The external simplicity surrounds an unexpectedly comfortable interior - full headroom, double bed, storage, light, power, woolly blanket and light cotton sleeping bag.
All other hotelery devices (Toilets, showers, minibar, cafe, etc.) are supplied by the surrounding public space. From May through October: The simultaneously functional and comfortable concrete sleep-pipes offer the chance to experience a place in a totally new way. Personal door code: Upon booking you will receive a code to allow entry to your personal suite. For the period of your stay dasparkhotel remains your all hours access safety zone - the charger for your personal energy reserves. The chance to safely store your luggage and recharge portable electronic devices allows complete freedom of movement. Infrastructure: Because we obtain sanitation, breakfast and other hotel facilities from existing public infrastructure, it is possible for us to work with the very simple, user-friendly pay as you wish system. A night in dasparkhotel costs just as much as you can afford or want to pay.
Costs: We see "pay as you wish" as a system where customers leave a Euro amount that they can afford and with which they wish to support our project. Reservations: Reservations can be made at dasparkhotel.net/reservation at any time.
