Most of the non-portable yurts are made out of wood or have wood siding. Actually, i am not sure as to whether a 5 sided or multi-sided structure made out of wood is really a yurt at all, but until i find out i will leave things as they are.

YURTA I like this yurt a lot. They can use a synthetic covering on this yurt. It is highly portable, very lightweight.

GROOVY YURTS That's their name - i did not make it up. This is a pretty neat and different website. This yurt building business is located in Quebec, Canada, but they ship everywhere including the lower 48 states.

LITTLE FOOT YURTS This traditional yurt manufacturer is based in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada. They seem to build there product from scratch, just about. Everything is homemade.

SMILING WOOD YURTS They describe themselves as: "Makers of fine handcrafted wooden yurts".

We are a small family owned and operated business located near the small town of Twisp, in the beautiful Methow Valley, on the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains in North Central Washington State. We have been in the business of designing and building unique homes, custom cabinets and fine furniture for over 25 years. Round and out of the ordinary has been the main theme of our creations. We have put all of our learned skills and knowledge to use in the design and creation of our yurts. Our yurts are built with the highest quality construction grade lumber available. The walls are 2x4 construction with an optional upgrade to 2x6 if you need the extra space for more insulation. The walls are sheathed with a 1/2" shear panel, covered with a vapor barrier and sided with 1x6 tongue and groove western red cedar. (All wood components exposed to the weather are western red cedar). The walls are screwed to each other and to the floor. A cable secures the tops of the walls together. The rafters are structural 2x4 or 2x6 Douglas fir or stress tested lumber, with the optional upgrade to 2x8 if you need more insulation or roof load capacity. The central compression ring is laminated of three to eight layers of Douglas fir lumber, twelve pieces each in each layer, glued and screwed together. Rafters are bolted to the top plates of the walls and pinned/bolted to the compression ring. A cable holds the rafters in firmly to the compression ring. Eaves and bird blocking are made of western red cedar and screwed to the rafters. The metal roof is 22 gauge galvanized metal, which can be painted. It is secured to the roof structure with roofing screws and bolts.

FIBERGLASS YURTS I think this business is located in Norfolk, Nebraska. This is a very unique product, maybe this business has no competition that i know of. The system is comprised of fiberglass reinforced plastic much like the hull of a fiberglass boat or automobile body.

YURT WITHOUT STEEL For those of you who are low on cash but still want your own personal Yurt, maybe this is the way to go for you. This piece copied from the Instructables website.

"I built this 10 foot diameter yurt without metal fasteners from free materials. It has the same proportions as the "standard" Mongolian ger scaled down. The varnished wood and white liner give it a marvelous feeling inside. Lots of people told me this was the best shelter they'd seen at Burningman.
Yurt" is the Russian word. "Ger" is the Mongolian.
Most of the wooden parts are sawed from the slats of a futon couch. The wall lattice pivots are knotted cord. The door frame is made from hockey sticks. The smoke ring is an aluminum bicycle rim. At Burning Man I set the yurt up on top of my truck's lumber rack on a platform of redwood boards. That enabled us to drive around and move camp easily."

YURTCO This company is located in British Columbia Canada. They do have an outlet or sales representative in the state of Washington, see below. The photo section of their website shows some beautiful examples of yurts they build.

WOODLAND YURTS This is a very nice website located in the UK (England) with some information about building your own yurt and they also have a book about yurts called "The Complete Yurt Handbook" by Paul King.

GO YURT This appears to be an outstanding product. Give these folks a try. Looks to be a new and very well designed portable yurt system. Made in Oregon and shipped anywhere.

HEXAYURT This website is pretty neat and shows a new method of building a very low cost personal dwelling.

"The Hexayurt is a prize-winning shelter you can build yourself for about $200. Suitable raw materials include common building materials ( fire safe insulation boards), hexacomb cardboard and plastic. You cut six 4' x 8' panels in half diagonally to make the roof, and use six more whole panels to form the walls. It takes about two hours. The design is in the public domain. Different materials are appropriate for different uses - insulation, extended life, low cost, durability in extreme environments and so on. The design is in the public domain, and is in active development as a Free/Open Source style project. GEO-LITE SYSTEMS This company sells a yurt style dwelling using wood panels for walls.

"The standard Geo-Lite hybrid-yurt style dwelling are wood-frame units which can be installed in one day; steel-framed units in 1-1/2 days. Geo-Lite Systems sells plans and rapid set-up kits for hybrid, yurt-like dwellings with or without utility packages. Utility packages include self-contained systems, systems for connection to conventional utilities and conversion modules which add utilities to shell-type structures made by others. Exterior walls of all units are composed of 4' x 7' panels arranged edge-to-edge in a circle. Panels in wood-framed units are framed with wood. The wood frame is left exposed on the inside and no insulation is included. Panels in steel-framed models are framed with 13-16 gauge steel. The interior wall surface of steel-framed units is prefinished wood paneling. Polyisocyanurate insulation is installed in the wall cavities of steel-framed units. RED SKY SHELTERS Home of the Yome. Part Yurt, Part Dome - the Yome by Red Sky Shelters is the Affordable Portable Living Shelter.

Standard roof fabrics. Rainier yurts use top-quality structural fabrics with an acrylic top coat, for roofs. They are warranted for up to 15 years. These fabrics are commonly used in tensile structures, in which fabric spans are self supported between cables or masts.

Roof cinching system. Rainier yurts come with a simple, fool-proof method to cinch the roof to the wall. Our cord is easy to lace and keep clean. Both the Eagle and Raven yurt systems match grommets with the rafters and lattice for easy installation, better tensioning and attractive finished appearance.
Wall fabrics. Rainier's yurt walls are made with premium grade fabrics with superior coatings and warranties. Our walls are cotton/polyester fabrics with acrylic top coats.

THE COLORADO YURT COMPANY I had to spend time looking for a decent picture of their Yurt and here it is. Nice website and good looking products.

CALIFORNIA YURTS This business is located in Talmage, California. It is the product of one man named "David Raitt". It looks to me that all his Yurts are made using wood throughout including the siding and are not portable. They make for great home office or home studios, extra bedrooms or small guest house.

PACIFIC YURTS This company has been around for quite awhile and is quite famous. They have a very informational website with lots of pictures. "Standard Features - All Models: Lattice Wall: Expandable, clear, kiln dried, Douglas fir lath. Finished with a wood penetrating oil: assembled with aluminum "pop-rivets". Standard height is 6ft; optional tall height is approximately 7ft. Rafters: High quality, structural grade Douglas fir, sanded and finished with a wood penetrating oil: hardened steel pins are inserted in ends which fit into holes in center ring. Center Ring: Beautiful laminated Douglas fir compression ring finished with a wood penetrating oil: through-bolted for additional strength.

After a 6 year run, I find that worldly considerations are making it impossible for me to continue operating Singing Horse Designs with the energy and focus it requires and deserves. As of March 1st, 2005 I am ceasing my retail operations.
Customers: Please be assured that Gers-in-process will be completed and shipped. I will continue to be a source of standard replacement parts for at least another year.
At some time in the future, I may be offering complete plans and instructions for Ger construction, based on what I have learned since building my first Ger in 1985 and the 40-plus I've made for others since then.
